Summary
(LOS ANGELES) Jason Pomeranc, a partner of Thompson Hotels, which owns 60 Thompson in N.Y. and runs the refurbished Hollywood Roosevelt in L.A., can add another title to his growing list of credits: movie producer. His newly formed company, Thompson Media, produced a 12-minute short called L.A. Suite, which had its premier at a screening at the Hollywood Roosevelt here on Wednesday night. Starring Olivia Wilde from The O.C. and Enrique Murciano from Without a Trace, its both a promo for the hotelit was shot thereand an examination of the nature of fantasy in hotel life. Pomeranc and Thompson Hotels are busy guys: on the slate are a new hotel in New York at 6 Columbus, a hotel on the Lower East Side, one in Beverly Hills, and one in Washington D.C. They are also cooking up a new magazine with Blackbook that will be distributed in Thompson Hotels (Adrien Brody was just photographed for the first cover) called Room 100, so named for the room in the Chelsea Hotel that belonged to Sid and Nancy. The Daily sat down with Pomeranc at the screening and asked, Why make a movie? And why now?
How does a 12 minute fictional short play into promoting your
hotel?
A big part of what were doing is maintaining a language with our potential
client. Brand loyalty is more competitive these days. The brand, with its style,
its food, its sensibility, should extend to communication. The short film
explains our inspiration. L.A. Suite is a blending of fantasy and reality that
is inherent in hotel life. Thats what the hotel experience is for couples.
What are you going to do with this short film in terms of
distribution?
Enter it into shorts festivals, put it on the Internet, hold small screenings
like this one. And thats enough. Its not meant to be a typical ad or
commercial for the hotel. I mean it to have a life as a film.
So who is your audience? Who is the ideal guest at a Thompson Hotel?
Heres our guest profile: the person is complicated. Our media should respect
those contradictions that go into extraordinary life experiences. The girl
character in the movie, played by Olivia Wilde, was born out of thinking, What
if Eloise at the Plaza grew up and moved into the Hollywood Roosevelt? Shes
sexy, but shed also be something of a sad vagabond. The male character is
brooding and fashionable at the same timea kind of Heathcliff character. We
wonder, is he manipulating her? And at the same time, in a marketing scenario,
are you, the viewer, being manipulated? I think thats interesting. MERLE
